Adjustable contact point for better control
Key takeaway from our Guru
Why should I not always hit the ball in front of me?
Hitting the ball in front of you forces a cross-court angle and limits your follow-through. By hitting the ball more to your side, you can carry the ball forward with more control and adjust your trajectory based on the situation.
What this lesson covers
The contact point varies depending on the intended angle and the specific shot. Hitting the ball directly in front of the body often forces a cross-court trajectory, whereas hitting the ball more to the side allows for a longer, more controlled push through the ball. A functional, adjustable technique prioritizes timing and body rotation over rigid form. When players force every contact to be in front, they often lose the ability to generate slice or carry the ball forward effectively.
Shoulder rotation is essential for finding the correct contact point. By positioning the non-dominant foot forward, players can better align their body to hit the ball next to them rather than reaching too far forward. This adjustment is particularly relevant for volleys and the bandeja. For shots like the kick smash, the contact point is naturally later, allowing for more brush on the ball. To improve timing, players can practice catching the ball with their non-dominant hand at the side of the body or use the bounce-hit verbal cue to ensure they are waiting for the ball to reach the optimal position before swinging.
