Volley contact point: fixing low net shots

Hitting the ball below the net height causes net errors. To prevent this, adjust your court position based on the opponent's incoming ball speed and swing size. If the opponent is in trouble or hitting slow, move closer to the net to catch the ball at a higher contact point. When the opponent shows a large swing, expect a fast ball and stay back to block rather than stepping in. If the opponent has a small swing, you can vary your pace and step in to attack.

Footwork is the foundation for a stable net position. Use small, quick steps to adjust your distance to the ball. A resistance band around the ankles helps force these small steps during practice, allowing you to focus on your arm movement. When you have time, step into the ball and use a long follow-through with a stretched arm, finishing with the racket face pointing toward the opponent. If the incoming ball is fast, keep the backswing short and perform a simple block. Always watch the opponent's racket face to anticipate a lob versus a low shot.
