Low volley tactics: drop shots and short angles

When the contact point for a volley is lower than the net, lifting the ball deep into the opponent's court creates a high rebound. This allows the opponent to play a chiquita, a lob, or an attacking volley, effectively neutralizing the net position. Instead of trying to force an attack from a defensive position, the goal is to keep the ball low to prevent the opponent from applying pressure.

Three tactical solutions allow the player to maintain the net position. First, a drop shot forces the opponent to move forward and hit the ball from below the net. Second, a soft, short ball played into the center of the court forces the opponent to run, resulting in a lower contact point. Third, playing short against the side fence forces the opponent out of position, making it difficult for them to execute a lob. Adjusting court positioning based on the opponent's tendencies, such as moving closer to the net against players who favor short angles, is essential for defensive success.
