Volley placement: targeting and court geometry

Volley placement relies on understanding court geometry and the limitations of your own reach. When playing on the right, use the forehand volley to target the side wall, as the backhand volley struggles to create that same angle. On the left, the backhand volley is the primary tool for hitting the side wall, while the forehand volley covers the middle. Avoid playing to the side glass panel closest to the opponent, as this is the easiest ball to defend. Instead, target the center of the court, specifically the middle glass, to build the point and keep the opponents moving.

Contact point location relative to the service line dictates the effectiveness of the volley. Hitting the ball before the white line forces the opponent to use the glass, creating a more difficult defensive situation. Deep volleys behind the service line allow the opponent more time to react unless they are inexperienced with wall play. Focus on building the point with controlled, slower volleys rather than attempting to hit winners. This strategy is most effective for players looking to transition from tennis-style play to a tactical padel approach.
