Volley and defense: net and baseline tactics
Key takeaway from our Guru
How do I control the volley and defend against a better player?
Keep your volleys low and deep to prevent the opponent from attacking. When defending, hit the ball well in front of your body to maintain control and hit cross-court.
What this lesson covers
The net player aims to keep the ball below the opponent's waist. A deeper target makes it harder for the defender to lift the ball. When the incoming ball is slow, the volleyer adds weight to force depth. When the ball is fast, the volleyer uses a block or a shoulder turn to control the pace. The volleyer must adapt the stroke to the specific situation rather than forcing pace on every ball.
Defenders focus on hitting low, flat, and deep shots to prevent the net player from hitting an aggressive volley. If the defender hits a weak shot, the net player gains an advantage. Anticipation is vital for the defender. When the ball hits the side glass with spin, the defender must reach forward with the tip of the paddle to redirect it. The defender should avoid hitting the ball too far behind the body, as this forces a parallel trajectory. Proper footwork ensures the player hits the ball well in front to achieve a cross-court angle.
