Defensive positioning and the fast lob
Key takeaway from our Guru
How do I defend against aggressive volleyers from the back of the court?
Stay grounded and use your shoulders to push the ball instead of jumping. When the opponent is aggressive, use a fast lob by keeping your feet planted and finishing your stroke with an upward arm motion.
What this lesson covers
Effective defense requires staying grounded and avoiding jumping during contact. When hitting difficult balls, the player must maintain a stable base, using the hips and shoulders to generate power rather than relying on the arm or wrist. This stability allows for better control and direction, preventing the ball from lifting unintentionally. The coach emphasizes that movement and positioning are the foundation of defensive play, as poor footwork renders technique irrelevant.
The fast lob serves as a tactical counterattack when the opponent is aggressive at the net. It shares the same setup as a low defensive shot, with the player finishing the stroke with the arm moving upward. This technique avoids the need to lift the legs, keeping the player balanced. After executing a fast lob, the player should remain in the back to cover the court rather than rushing the net. This shot forces opponents to hit downward, creating opportunities to regain control or transition into an offensive position. Success comes from recognizing when a ball is playable and committing to the stroke with confidence.
