Volley selection: choosing direction and depth

Volleying requires patience and precise decision-making based on the difficulty of the incoming ball. When the ball is difficult, block it to the opponent's feet or play it diagonally to maintain control. Avoid rushing forward, as staying back provides more time to react to poor shots and prevents the opponent from easily lobbing over you. When the ball is intermediate, aim for the middle to restrict the opponent's angles and prevent them from setting up a lob.

High, easy balls offer the most flexibility, allowing for aggressive shots into either corner. When choosing to cut the ball to the middle, ensure the shot is deep enough to prevent the opponent from attacking with a lob. Avoid parallel volleys unless the ball is slow or high, as changing direction prematurely often leaves you out of position. Focus on moving toward the ball rather than reaching for it, and maintain a consistent technique regardless of whether you hit a forehand or backhand. Success comes from keeping the rally alive and waiting for the opponent to make a mistake rather than forcing a winner.
