Net attack: positioning and shot selection

Net play requires a balance between maintaining position, applying pressure, and finishing points. Players often make the mistake of standing too close to the net, which limits their ability to react to lobs or balls hit at head height. A standard net position should be between two and three meters from the net, adjusted based on the quality of the partner's serve and the player's own physical reach. Taller players may stand closer, while shorter players must be more selective about their aggression to avoid being lobbed.

Points are rarely won with a single shot but rather through consistent pressure and tactical placement. When the ball is comfortable, players should aim to finish the point, but they must distinguish between a ball that is easy to hit and one that is truly a put-away. Avoid hitting every ball at maximum power, as this leads to unforced errors. Instead, use different types of volleys—blocked, flat, or cut—depending on the incoming ball. When forced to defend from the back or transition, focus on keeping the ball deep or low to regain the net position rather than attempting a winner from an unfavorable spot.
