Forehand technique: grip, preparation, and impact

Prepare early by turning your shoulders and pulling the racket back with your non-dominant hand. Keep your movement fluid like music rather than cutting down like you are chopping bamboo.
The backhand requires a fluid, full-body motion rather than a rigid arm movement. Start with a continental grip, closing the hand slightly to facilitate top spin when needed. The preparation begins by turning the shoulders to the side and pulling the racket back to the pocket using the non-dominant hand. Keep the elbow stable and avoid bending it, as this leads to an incorrect downward cutting motion. Maintain the racket head up during footwork adjustments to ensure the shot remains ready.
At the impact point, use the non-dominant hand to push the racket forward, creating tension in the chest before opening both arms as the ball reaches the belly button. Strike the ball in front of the body to maintain balance and power. Avoid hitting too close to the body or too far away. The finish must be long and extended to ensure control. Closing the racket face slightly at the end of the swing helps the ball dip below the net level. This technique is for players looking to replace choppy, rigid strokes with a consistent, rhythmic backhand.
