In defense, taking two steps back toward the glass when a ball is slow allows for a higher contact point and better preparation. This movement ensures the player is positioned correctly rather than rushing or rotating in place. For the smash, hitting the ball flatter and softer allows it to bounce higher off the back glass, making it harder to defend than a high-speed shot that compresses against the wall.
At the net, precision is more effective than raw power. Targeting the center of the court, specifically the area between the two service boxes, forces the opponents to communicate and move, as this is the most difficult area to defend. Varying the pace between soft, controlled shots and faster attacks makes a player unpredictable. This approach is most beneficial for players who rely on power but struggle to maintain accuracy during long rallies.
