Pro serve technique: five steps for an aggressive start

Key takeaway from our Guru

How do I hit a professional padel serve?

Keep your contact point at waist height and use a slice by brushing down the back of the ball. Always move your body weight forward into the court immediately after you hit to reach the net position.

What this lesson covers

Professional players share five consistent elements in their serve. They release the ball to the side and in front to ensure contact occurs in front of the body. A full takeback allows the racket to move down through the ball, while keeping contact height near the waist enables an attacking strike. Slicing the ball by brushing down with an open racket face keeps the serve low at the opponent's end. Finally, body momentum carries the player forward toward the net immediately after contact.

Common errors include contacting the ball too low, which forces an upward trajectory that is easy for opponents to return. Tennis players often mistakenly drop the racket below the ball to hit with topspin, whereas a slice requires a downward motion. A lack of intention when standing at the service line also prevents an aggressive start. To build a consistent serve, hold the ball at 11 o'clock and the racket at 3 o'clock at shoulder height. Dropping the ball from this position allows it to bounce naturally to waist height, creating a reliable setup for the swing.
