Anticipation and reading opponent patterns

Key takeaway from our Guru

How can I anticipate my opponent's next shot in padel?

Look at your opponent's body rotation and racket face before they strike the ball. If they are on the stretch, expect a weaker shot, but if they are comfortable and rotating fully, prepare for a faster ball.

What this lesson covers

Anticipation begins with court positioning. Players at the back of the court generally hit the ball upward, while those at the net strike downward. A player close to the net tends to be aggressive, whereas someone further back often plays a bandeja to recover position. Assessing whether an opponent is comfortable or stretched provides a reliable indicator of the quality of their incoming shot. A player who is off-balance or forced to run will produce a weaker response than one who reaches the ball with time to set up.

Individual player patterns also offer clues. Observing whether an opponent prefers a lob or a bajada after being moved helps predict their next move. Physical cues like body rotation and swing path reveal the potential force behind a shot. A tucked elbow often suggests a shorter, slower ball, while significant rotation indicates higher speed. Finally, the racket face at the point of contact signals the intent, such as an open face for a lob. Once anticipation informs early movement, reading the ball's direction, height, speed, spin, and depth allows for the final adjustment before contact.

How to Read Your Opponent in Padel | Anticipate the Next Shot

Description

Want to anticipate your opponent’s next shot before they hit the ball? In this padel tactics lesson, I explain how to read your opponent, anticipate what is likely to happen next and react earlier so you can make better decisions on court. Good anticipation in padel isn’t guesswork. Your opponent gives you clues before they strike the ball. In this video, I break down the key information you should be looking for: • Where your opponent is positioned on the court • Whether they are comfortable, stretched or off balance • Their individual strengths, weaknesses and playing patterns • Their body position and amount of rotation • Their racket position and racket face • The likely direction, height, speed, spin and depth of the incoming ball • The difference between anticipating the shot and reading the ball once it has been hit The aim is to help you recognise these clues earlier, move into a better position and give yourself more time to react. The better you become at anticipating what your opponent is likely to do, the easier it becomes to read the ball and prepare your own response. WEEKEND PADEL CLINICS I also run intensive weekend padel clinics at Neighbourhood Padel in Digbeth, Birmingham. These are aimed particularly at players around Playtomic level 2.5–3.5 who feel their game has plateaued and want to move to the next level. The weekend includes: • Small group of 8 players • 10 hours of on-court coaching • Video analysis • Individual technical and tactical feedback • Personal video feedback to take away If you are interested in joining one of the clinics, leave a comment below or get in touch.
