Anticipation tactics: reading opponent shots
Key takeaway from our Guru
How can I predict what shot my opponent will hit next?
You anticipate by filtering their options through your own shot placement, their body movement, and their racket path. Watch for the racket head dropping below the ball during the take-back, which is a clear tell that a lob is coming.
What this lesson covers
Anticipation relies on narrowing down the opponent's possible shot choices through three specific filters. The process begins with the shot you just hit, which immediately eliminates physically impossible or high-risk returns for the opponent. If you hit a lob to a specific side, you restrict their ability to play aggressive shots like a vibora or a drop shot.
Next, observe the opponent's body movement as they approach the ball. A player forced to run back or reaching for a ball with poor body positioning has limited options, often resulting in a defensive scoop rather than an attacking backhand bajada. Finally, analyze the arm and racket position during the take-back. A racket head dropping below the ball indicates a high probability of a lob, allowing you to split-step and prepare for a bandeja early. Consistent practice involves watching match footage, pausing before contact, and predicting the outcome based on these visual cues.
