Anticipation and reading the opponent
Key takeaway from our Guru
How can I read my opponent's next shot?
Watch the racket face and the height of the preparation before the ball is struck. A closed racket face and high preparation indicate a downward shot, while an open face and low preparation signal an incoming lob.
What this lesson covers
Reading the opponent relies on three distinct areas: movement anticipation, ball trajectory, and situation awareness. Movement anticipation starts with the opponent's racket stance. An open racket face often signals a lob, while a closed face suggests a downward strike. High preparation usually precedes a shot played downwards, whereas low preparation indicates a potential lob. Footwork also provides clues, as a closed stance limits the ability to play cross-court, allowing for more aggressive positioning.
Ball trajectory involves calculating speed, spin, and the likely second bounce off the glass. This allows a player to wait for the ball rather than chasing it. Situation anticipation focuses on identifying recurring patterns, such as an opponent who consistently blocks fast volleys or one who accelerates under pressure during golden points. To develop these skills, avoid static basket drills or ball machines, which lack the visual cues of a real opponent. Instead, favor rally drills with varied speed and spin to force constant adjustment. Discussing match patterns with a partner helps identify these tendencies and weaknesses, turning observation into a tactical advantage.

This is How YOU Can Read Your Padel Opponents
Description
Hello everybody! We are back in Holland from a nice trip to Spain, and to be honest.. It looks kind of grey. While being in the plane I thought of new videos and what is very important to learn, and it came to properly reading the opponent. I feel like loads of coaches and players are focusing a lot on technique. Technique can be very important, but I believe it's not the most important thing. What do you think? If you focus on your technique your focus can be a lot about YOU, you as a player, you as the way your arm functions or the grip you are using. If you focus so much on yourself you cannot see the what is happening on the other side of court. YOUR opponent. When you are playing a match, this might be an important factor. Because if you are focusing on your opponent you might get all the information you need way earlier or faster. Which also makes your technique better! You will hit the ball way better, because you can literary predict the future! Stop focusing on yourself, start focusing on your opponent! ~ 10% discount if you visit my online padel shop.
