Volley and overhead consistency training
Key takeaway from our Guru
How can I improve my consistency during long rallies?
Prioritize control and depth over speed. Keep your volleys below the opponent's hip level and ensure your overheads land deep to prevent the ball from bouncing off the back glass.
What this lesson covers
This session focuses on maintaining high-volume rallies to build consistency in volleys and overheads. For volleys, the emphasis remains on keeping the ball low, below the opponent's hip level. Players must rotate their shoulders to generate power rather than relying on wrist movement. Striking the ball too far in front of the body leads to errors, so the contact point must stay aligned with the torso. When players prioritize speed over control, the ball often creates too much bounce off the glass, allowing opponents to counter-attack. A controlled, slower pace helps maintain depth and keeps the ball below the net, which is essential for holding the net position.
For overheads, the training shifts to the bandeja and vibora. The goal is to keep the ball deep and low to prevent it from rebounding off the back glass. If a player is positioned further back in the court, they must adjust the trajectory to ensure the ball lands behind the opponents, preventing them from taking the initiative. The session concludes with a target-based drill for the smash, highlighting the importance of technique over raw power when attempting to bring the ball out of the court.
