Volley and bandeja: slice and follow-through

VolleyJan 10, 2022

Key takeaway from our Guru

How much slice should I use on my volleys and bandeja?

Use a short backswing to hide your intentions and maintain a long follow-through to keep the ball deep. Aim for a 50-50 balance between power and slice to make your shots difficult to half-volley.

What this lesson covers

Effective net play relies on using slice to control the ball while maintaining a consistent follow-through. A short backswing makes your intentions harder to read, allowing you to mix power with slower, sliced shots from the same preparation. Keep your elbows in front and aim to cut across the top of the ball rather than hitting through it. This downward motion forces the ball to stay low, making it difficult for opponents to defend or hit a clean half-volley.

When executing a bandeja or volley, the arm should move faster than the upper body, which serves primarily for aiming. Avoid stopping the racket abruptly after contact, as this kills the ball's momentum. Instead, carry the ball forward with a long follow-through to maintain depth. If you are further from the net, play slower to give yourself time to recover your position. Using more slice in the center of the court forces opponents to deal with unpredictable bounces, often creating opportunities to win the point immediately. This lesson is for players who want to vary their pace and keep opponents pinned at the back.
