Vibora defence: positioning and shot selection
Key takeaway from our Guru
How do I decide whether to block a vibora or play it off the glass?
Watch the opponent's position and the quality of your previous lob. If your lob is deep and central, move forward to block before the glass, but retreat to use the glass if the opponent is close to the net and hitting aggressively.
What this lesson covers
Defending against a vibora requires reading the opponent's court position immediately. When the opponent has a wide angle, prioritize covering the fence to limit their easiest target. If your lob lands deep through the center, take a position closer to the net where a single step allows you to cover both sides of the court. The decision to block before the glass or wait for the rebound depends on the opponent's proximity to the net. Aggressive, close-range shots force a retreat to use the glass for support, while shots from further back allow for a proactive block.
When blocking, aim the ball toward the player who hit the vibora while monitoring the partner's movement. If the ball reaches you behind your body, play it downwards to maintain control. If the ball arrives in front of your body, use a lob to reset or counter-attack to reclaim the net position. This approach keeps constant pressure on the attackers, preventing them from settling comfortably at the net.
