Effective teamwork relies on constant verbal communication between partners. Players must announce their positions and intentions, using cues like both up, one back, or both back to ensure synchronized movement. When one player plays a chiquita, the partner needs to know immediately if the attacker is moving forward to the net or staying back to avoid leaving gaps in the court. If a shot is not perfect, the safest tactical choice is often to retreat and reset the point rather than forcing a risky follow-up.
Volley placement dictates the flow of the point. Volleys directed to the middle or deep toward the glass force opponents into difficult defensive positions, creating space to close the net. When opponents are at the back, a deep volley that hits the glass allows players to advance and pressure the net. Conversely, if a volley is too soft or poorly placed, staying back or retreating is necessary to avoid being caught out of position. Players should avoid crossing into their partner's side of the court, as this leaves large areas open for the opponents to exploit.
