Tactical framework for court decision making
Key takeaway from our Guru
How do I measure my tactical performance on court?
Use the HDDSS checklist to evaluate your shots. Assess the height, direction, distance, speed, and spin of every ball to see if you are successfully controlling space and time.
What this lesson covers
This lesson introduces a structured tactical framework for evaluating and planning padel play. The system categorizes the game into seven specific situations: serving, returning, net play, defending against net players, both pairs at the net, both pairs at the back, and transition. Each situation is further defined by three phases of play: attack, neutral, or defend. These phases depend on the player's ability to handle the incoming ball rather than just their physical location on the court.
Tactical intentions follow a chronological progression: consistency, controlling space, controlling time, and finally playing to strengths while exploiting opponent weaknesses. To measure the effectiveness of these intentions, the framework uses the HDDSS acronym: Height, Direction, Distance, Speed, and Spin. For instance, a successful serve aims for low net clearance, specific depth toward the side glass, and moderate speed with backspin to limit the opponent's reaction time. This checklist allows players and coaches to rate performance by tracking how often a specific intent is executed successfully within a designated phase and situation. It is suitable for players looking to quantify their tactical level and coaches building lesson plans.

The Tactical Checklist Every Padel Coach and Player Needs
Description
Welcome back. It’s Nick from The Coach Station. At this next stop I’m unpacking the LTA Tactical framework that I use a Coach and Coach Educator. I've played an integral part of it's development as a consultant over many years. I will show you how to actually use it on court – for padel players and coaches. Think of it as a tactical checklist you can apply to any game situation, any phase of play, and any shot. We’ll work through: • The game situations (serve, return, at net, back court, both back, both at net, transition) • The three phases of play: attack, neutral, defend • The tactical intentions: consistency, control space, control time, play to strengths & exploit weaknesses • How to measure tactics using ball characteristics: Height, Direction, Distance, Speed, Spin (HDDSS) I’ll walk you through practical examples using the serve, the bandeja, and a neutral volley to panel 5, so you can see exactly how to build lessons and check your players’ (or your own) tactical level. If you’re a coach, this gives you a clear structure for planning sessions. If you’re a player, it gives you a way to rate your tactical level in each situation and see what to work on next. If you want more videos using this framework in specific positions (serve & return, net play, back glass etc.), let me know in the comments.
