Smash out of court: technique and positioning

Smash5:07Nov 30, 2020

Key takeaway from our Guru

How do I hit a smash that bounces out of the court?

You must be close to the net to create a steep downward angle. Ensure your racket starts above the contact point, hit the ball in front of your body, and aim for the front half of the opponent's court.

What this lesson covers

Executing a smash that clears the four-meter back fence requires a steep downward trajectory and significant power. Success depends on early recognition of a soft or defensive ball from the opponent, allowing the player to move forward toward the net immediately. The closer to the net the contact point occurs, the easier it becomes to achieve the necessary angle to bounce the ball over the fence. If the player remains too far back in the court, the trajectory becomes too shallow, causing the ball to rebound off the glass for the opponent to retrieve.

Technically, the racket must be raised above the contact point before swinging downward. Contact must occur in front of the body to maintain control and downward force. A slight flick of the wrist helps generate the required steepness, particularly on the backhand side. Aiming for the front half of the opponent's court is essential, as deeper targets lack the angle to clear the fence. Practicing this shot by hitting against the back glass helps develop the necessary feel for both forehand and backhand smashes.
