Slice serve technique: horizontal swing path
Key takeaway from our Guru
How do I stop hitting a bouncy serve?
You must start your racket head above the ball and swing horizontally through it. If you drop the ball at waist height, you can easily maintain this downward slice path instead of lifting the ball.
What this lesson covers
Many players hit a bouncy serve because the racket head drops below the ball before contact. This creates an upward swing path that sends the ball high over the net. To hit an attacking slice serve, the racket must travel on a horizontal path. Start the racket head above the ball and swing down through it to generate slice. This keeps the ball trajectory low over the net and prevents it from bouncing high on the opponent's side.
Contact height determines the swing path. If the ball is dropped too low, the player is forced to lift the ball to clear the net. Drop the ball at waist height to allow for a clean, horizontal strike. Practice this motion with a basket of balls to build muscle memory for the downward slice action. Using the first serve as an aggressive, slice-heavy shot is a practical way to integrate this technique into match play while keeping the second serve as a safer alternative.
