Setup volley tactics: creating space at the net

Professional players use the setup volley to manipulate opponent positioning rather than attempting to end points immediately. In the women's game, hitting the ball deep into the center forces both defenders to converge in the middle of the court. This movement opens large gaps on both sides, allowing the attacking pair to place the subsequent volley into the vacated space for a winner. The setup shot acts as a bridge to create an easier finishing opportunity.

In the men's game, the strategy shifts toward forcing the opponent deep against the back glass. By hitting the setup volley into the corner, the attacker pushes the defender to the very edge of the court. This positioning leaves the front area of the court empty. The attacker then uses an aggressive smash to exploit the lack of time the defender has to move forward. Both approaches rely on patience and tactical placement instead of raw power to secure the point.
