Serve technique: positioning and slice
Key takeaway from our Guru
How can I improve my padel serve to prevent getting lobbed?
Focus on hitting a low, slicing serve that accelerates after the bounce rather than a slow, high ball. Keep your left hand up during the preparation to ensure a clean, downward slice motion.
What this lesson covers
Effective serving requires precise court positioning to cover the middle and sidewall. Serving from the center allows for better court coverage compared to serving from the edge. A consistent preparation involves keeping the racket open with the top facing the glass and the bottom facing down. Maintaining the left hand up during the motion prevents a low to high swing, which often leads to an ineffective, floaty serve that is easily lobbed. The goal is to produce a low, slicing ball that accelerates after the bounce, allowing the server to reach the net position and execute a volley.
Contact height should ideally be at the belly button. Hitting the ball further in front directs it cross-court, while hitting closer to the body directs it straight. When aiming for the sidewall, target the area beyond the middle of the glass to make the return difficult. Always perform a split step the moment the opponent makes contact to remain ready to move in any direction. Communication between partners is vital, especially in Australian formation, to ensure the court is covered during the transition to the net.
