Serve formations: positioning and movement

What this lesson covers

In the traditional formation, the server stands midway between the side glass and the center line to balance court coverage. After serving, the server moves toward the line of the ball to reach a net position that allows covering both the middle and the fence. In the Australian formation, the server starts near the center line to minimize the distance to the net and avoid obstructing their partner. Responsibilities shift here, as the server covering the line must reach a position far enough out to defend the fence, while the partner stays closer to the center to cover the middle.

Regardless of the formation, the net position is referenced by the second post of the fence. Players should stand roughly one step in front of this post to prepare for the return. If the serve is strong and the opponents are in trouble, moving forward allows for an aggressive volley. If a lob is anticipated, staying at the post or taking a step back prepares the player for a bandeja. The most common error is delaying the transition to the net while watching the serve; moving immediately after contact is required to reach the net position in time.
