Serve and volley: common technical mistakes
Key takeaway from our Guru
Why do I get lobbed when I serve and volley?
You are likely getting lobbed because your serve is too weak or your contact point is too low, forcing you to lift the ball. Ensure you hit the ball at waist height and perform a split step the moment your opponent strikes the return to stay in control.
What this lesson covers
Effective serve and volley requires a high contact point and a serve directed toward the middle of the court. Serving from near the center line reduces the distance to the net and limits the opponent's ability to use the side wall for a return. Players often struggle because they hit the ball too low, which forces them to lift the ball and leaves them vulnerable to an immediate attack. Maintaining a taller posture during the serve allows for a more direct, aggressive contact point.
Movement toward the net must be controlled. A split step at the moment the opponent makes contact with the return is essential for changing direction and maintaining balance. Running through the shot without stopping prevents the player from reacting to lobs or fast balls at the feet. Furthermore, mixing the serve direction between the side wall and the center forces the opponent to move, creating opportunities to pressure one specific player. A recommended drill involves serving to the side wall and placing the subsequent volley into the center of the court to force the opponent to cover more ground.
