Right court overheads: bandeja and gancho technique
Key takeaway from our Guru
Which overhead should I use when playing on the right side of the court?
Prioritize the bandeja and gancho over the vibora. These shots are more forgiving and allow you to control the ball toward the fence or side glass while you recover your net position.
What this lesson covers
Right court players rarely use the vibora because the ball trajectory from the cross-court lob makes the bandeja or gancho more reliable. The bandeja functions like a high forehand volley, with a downward swing path that is more forgiving than the horizontal brush of a vibora. When the ball arrives over the left shoulder, the gancho acts as a windmill motion to block the ball down, preventing it from popping up.
Strategic overhead play on the right side focuses on setting up the left-side partner rather than finishing the point immediately. Players should aim for the area between the second fence post and the side glass separation to create unpredictable bounces. Regardless of the shot choice, the priority remains recovering the net position quickly. This approach suits right-court players who want to reduce risk and maintain consistency during defensive transitions.
