Effective communication relies on early information regarding the opponents' positions. When a player is lobbed and forced to defend off the back glass, the partner must track the opponents and relay their location immediately. Simple cues like up, net, or close help the player decide between a lob or an aggressive shot. At higher levels, partners specify if one opponent is forward or back to allow for more precise shot selection.

Timing is the most frequent error. Information provided after the player has begun their swing is useless and often distracting. Partners must also avoid the mistake of watching their teammate instead of the opponents. If the opponents move forward, the partner should retreat to a defensive position rather than remaining at the net. Establishing a consistent vocabulary early in the match prevents confusion about whether a call refers to the cross-court or down-the-line opponent.
