Strategic use of the gancho involves slowing down the game against opponents who prefer high-paced rallies. It is particularly effective when opponents are positioned semi-close to the net, as the softer, flatter trajectory is harder for them to block than a powerful smash. Players on the right side should also use the gancho to cover lobs directed over their left shoulder, as it is often more consistent than a high backhand volley. It is also a preferred choice in windy conditions where long backswings lead to timing errors, or when wet glass surfaces make a soft, dropping ball difficult to retrieve.
