Dropshot technique: timing and contact

The dropshot relies on identifying the correct moment to play. Avoid the shot when receiving high balls, as the trajectory makes it ineffective. Instead, look for opportunities when opponents are positioned deep near the glass, as this forces them to cover significant distance. Position yourself between the first and second post before attempting the shot, as being too far back gives the opponent excessive reaction time. When playing against the wind, the ball naturally drops, making it an ideal time to execute the shot.

Technique requires a Continental grip with a loose wrist. Use a compact preparation, keeping the racket close to the body to avoid over-swinging. If the incoming ball is fast, simply block and stop the ball to absorb the pace. If the ball is slow, add a small forward carry with the slice to generate the necessary touch. Avoid large steps, as these lead to large swings; use small, controlled movements to turn the upper body. Practice with a smaller racket or padel wood to force shorter preparation and follow-through.
