The fake smash relies on a convincing setup to force opponents to move forward in anticipation of a powerful shot. Players must adopt the standard trophy position used for flat or topspin smashes to sell the aggression. If the body language changes too early, the opponents will read the intent and remain in a defensive position at the back. The disguise is maintained until the final moment, when the racket motion shifts from a full swing to a soft brush over the ball.

Success depends on hitting the ball with low pace directly down the center of the court. Because opponents expect a fast smash, they often vacate the middle to cover the sides or move toward the net to defend a high-bouncing ball. A soft shot that dies before or shortly after hitting the back glass prevents the opponents from recovering. This tactic is most effective after establishing a reputation for hitting aggressive smashes earlier in the match. It is a useful tool for players who have already developed a reliable attacking smash.
