Bandeja tactics: neutralising aggressive net players
Key takeaway from our Guru
How do I stop opponents from volleying my bandeja?
Do not give the ball to the player rushing the net. Aim for the player staying back, hit hard at the body of the attacker, or simply reset the point by moving back.
What this lesson covers
Professional players often rush the net to volley an incoming bandeja or smash. To counter this, hit the ball through the middle, specifically targeting the player who remained at the back. This prevents the advancing opponent from reaching the ball. Another effective option is hitting the ball hard at the body of the net player to force an uncomfortable volley. Aim for high contact and depth rather than trying to force the ball down into the net. Seeking to deflect the ball wide can also force a poor block from the opponent, creating an opening for the next shot.
When both opponents rush the net, a softer bandeja followed by a quick move forward can allow for a volley finish. If the situation does not allow for an aggressive response, play the ball softly and retreat to the back of the court to reset the point. Alternatively, let the lob pass and hit another lob to nullify the opponent's aggressive positioning. This lesson is for players who struggle to maintain control when opponents pressure their bandeja.
