Bandeja defense: positioning and reading the bounce
Key takeaway from our Guru
How do you defend against a bandeja?
Stay behind the white line and prepare your racket low to the ground. Step back with your rear foot first and wait for the ball to come off the wall until it is in front of you.
What this lesson covers
Defending the bandeja begins with reading the opponent's intent. If the opponent prepares for a smash, move forward. If they prepare for a bandeja, stay behind the white line. Anticipating the bounce point dictates the defensive strategy. When the ball bounces behind the white line, use the wall to slow it down. If the ball bounces before the white line, take it before it hits the wall. Balls hitting the first glass are the most difficult to time, while balls hitting the second or third glass lose speed and are easier to return.
Technique requires a low stance, keeping the racket close to the ground in preparation. Step back with the rear foot first to create space. Lower the body to match the low bounce of a quality bandeja. When the ball comes off the glass, wait until it is in front of the body before striking. Avoid lobbing when playing a half-volley; instead, play the ball low. Aiming back toward the opponent's backhand helps transition from defense to neutral ground.
