Bandeja and Vibora: technique and tactical use

Key takeaway from our Guru

What is the difference between a bandeja and a vibora?

Use the bandeja when you are deep in the court and need to control the ball to recover your net position. Use the vibora when you are closer to the net and can rotate your body to generate aggressive side spin.

What this lesson covers

The bandeja serves as a defensive tool from the back of the court to regain the net position. The player uses a chest-led motion, similar to a high forehand volley, with an open racket face to brush down the back of the ball. This creates a controlled, low-trajectory shot aimed at the side or back glass, buying time to return to the net.

The vibora functions as an attacking shot from the front of the court. The racket starts behind the head, and the player rotates the upper body to strike around the outside of the ball. This generates significant side spin and speed, making the ball kick off the glass and difficult to return. The primary error occurs when a player lacks a clear intention, resulting in a hybrid stroke that loses both control and speed. Success depends on deciding early whether to prioritize recovery or aggression.
