Backspin lob technique: disguise and ball control

The backspin lob serves as a defensive tool to neutralize aggressive opponents who rush the net after a bandeja. By faking a chiquita to force the opponent to close the gap, the player creates an opportunity to lift a fast, deep lob. This shot requires a similar preparation to a chiquita, but the follow-through changes based on the intended outcome. To execute the lob, the player gets under the ball and finishes with an upward motion to generate backspin. This spin prevents the ball from bouncing high off the back glass, forcing the opponent to retreat and struggle to generate power from a deep position.

Disguise remains essential to the success of this tactic. The player holds a neutral position at the back of the court, waiting to see if the opponent commits to a forward movement. When the opponent rushes in, the backspin lob forces them to scramble backward, often resulting in a weak overhead or a defensive shot that cannot be turned into a bajada. This sequence allows the player to maintain control of the point from the defensive zone. The technique is most effective against players who rely on constant forward pressure and high-energy movement.
