Keep your non-dominant hand on the throat of the racket during your backswing to ensure you rotate your shoulders. Ensure you contact the ball in front of your hip to use your whole arm instead of just your wrist.
The backhand requires the non-dominant hand to hold the throat of the racket during the preparation phase. This placement forces shoulder rotation and guides the racket back. Upon release, the left hand pulls away to generate power as the arm moves through the ball. Contact must occur in front of the hip to allow for proper weight transfer. Contacting too far forward leads to a jabbed motion and excessive wrist movement.
Players often rely on slice for low balls, which increases the risk of errors. Flat shots are preferred for balls below waist height, while slice is reserved for balls at chest height or above. A relaxed bend in the elbow during the backswing prevents a rigid arm. This flexibility allows for better control and adjustment of the racket face before contact. These adjustments benefit players struggling with consistency and power on their backhand groundstrokes.
