Back wall forehand: adjusting racket height

ForehandMar 5, 2020

Key takeaway from our Guru

How do I adjust my racket height for back wall shots?

Match your racket height to the speed of the incoming ball. Keep your racket low for fast balls to stay compact, and prepare higher when you have more time to generate spin.

What this lesson covers

The height of the racket preparation depends on the speed and trajectory of the incoming ball after it hits the back glass. When the opponent hits a hard volley that forces a quick response, the racket stays low throughout the movement. This low preparation allows for a compact swing when time is limited.

For a ball with medium speed, such as a flat volley from the opponent, the player opens the shoulders immediately after the ball bounces. The racket head remains at a medium height to maintain control. When the incoming ball is slow, the player has more time to prepare a higher racket position. This extra time allows for a full swing and the use of pronation to generate backspin for a more aggressive shot. The coach demonstrates these three heights to show how to adapt the swing to the pace of the game.
