Back court defense: ready position and racket prep
Key takeaway from our Guru
How can I improve my defense at the back of the court?
You must lower your ready position and take your racket back before the ball bounces. This early preparation gives you the time to move your feet and get behind the ball for a controlled contact.
What this lesson covers
Defending at the back of the court requires a low ready position. Keeping the racket at waist height allows for faster reactions to balls that bounce low. The second essential element is an early racket takeback. The racket must move into position before the ball bounces on the ground. This early preparation provides the time needed to move behind the ball and ensure contact occurs in front of the body.
To practice this, start in a side-on position with the racket already back, then shuffle to get behind the ball. Once this movement is comfortable, transition to a full ready position. The racket must lead the movement, acting like a door that opens to receive the ball. Whether using a ball machine or a training partner, the goal is to consistently get behind the ball and maintain a stable, early preparation. This technique applies to all shots off the glass, including returns of serve and double glass rebounds.
