Volley technique: seven common mistakes to avoid

VolleyJul 27, 2020

Key takeaway from our Guru

What are the most common volley mistakes in padel?

Stop trying to hit winners and focus on keeping the ball low. When you receive a low ball, play it slow to the middle to maintain control.

What this lesson covers

Maintaining the net position requires precise ball placement and tactical discipline. When moving out of position, avoid playing cross-court, as this leaves the court open and forces a partner to cover too much space. Instead, play the ball in the direction of your movement. When targeting the middle, apply the triple S rule: shorter, slower, and with more slice. This prevents the ball from bouncing off the back wall and allows it to die at the back of the court.

Most volleys should be directed cross-court to make defense more difficult for opponents. Avoid attempting winners; focus on building the point until a smash opportunity arises or the opponent makes an error. When the ball is low, play slowly to the middle or toward the opponent's defense rather than trying to force speed. Avoid playing toward the side glass, as this is easy to defend. Finally, keep the volley trajectory low to prevent the opponent from hitting a lob. Ensure the paddle is held in a ready position in front of the body to avoid an upward motion on contact.
