Volley technique: flat contact and footwork
Key takeaway from our Guru
How can I improve my padel volleys?
Stop your feet and perform a split step exactly when your opponent hits the ball. Ensure your racket preparation is short and keep your racket face open to impact the ball in front of your body.
What this lesson covers
Volleying requires a short preparation with the racket head open. To hit a flat volley, the player must impact the ball in front of the body. When the ball is higher than the net, the racket moves from high to low to generate power and backspin. When the ball is lower than the net, the preparation must be lower to allow a stroke from low to high for better control.
Footwork is essential for maintaining balance and accuracy. Players must face their feet toward the incoming ball rather than the opponent. A split step is required the moment the opponent makes contact with the ball. This stop allows the player to react to the next shot from a stable position. If the player is still moving during the opponent's contact, they cannot reach the ball effectively. The forehand often suffers when the player fails to align their feet correctly, causing the racket to close too early. Keeping the racket open and the shoulders square to the ball path ensures a cleaner, flatter strike.
