Volley tactics: moving opponents to force errors

Winning points at the net does not always require high-speed shots. Being in an attacking position allows a player to control the rally by moving opponents around the court until an easy ball is returned. Forcing the opponent to move out of position is the primary goal, whether through placement in the corners, the middle, or by using a drop shot to break the rhythm of the rally.

When a ball is high and behind the shoulder, power generation is impossible. In these situations, the best option is to place the ball toward the fence. This creates an unpredictable bounce that prevents the opponent from attacking. When the ball is lower or at waist height, a drop shot can be used to pull players who stand too close to the back glass toward the net.

Preparation depends on the height and comfort of the contact point. For deep volleys, rotate the shoulders and hips to put body weight into the shot. For volleys to the fence, keep the racket face vertical and use a short, controlled movement without a full follow-through. This approach suits players who want to build points patiently rather than forcing winners on every ball.
