Vibora footwork: jumping and weight transfer
Key takeaway from our Guru
How should I move my feet to hit a better vibora?
Focus on your hip rotation rather than just your arm. If you jump, land on your right foot to immediately push yourself forward, and if you stay grounded, adjust your lead foot based on whether the ball is in front of or behind you.
What this lesson covers
This lesson focuses on the lower body mechanics required for the vibora. The movement starts with opening the right hip to initiate the backward run. The progression involves a five-step sequence: opening the hip, crossing the left foot, jumping, rotating the hips in the air to transfer weight, and landing on the right foot to propel the player forward. This jump allows for higher contact and fluid shoulder rotation.
When not jumping, the footwork depends on the ball position. If the ball is in front, the player steps forward with the left foot to maintain balance. If the ball is behind or moving toward the side, the player opens the left hip backward to align the shoulders and facilitate forward rotation. Practicing these steps without a ball helps automate the movement. Small jumps are sufficient to transfer weight from back to front.
