Transition zone play: control and ball placement

The transition zone requires a controlled ball with backspin rather than an aggressive, high-speed shot. When moving from the back of the court toward the net, the goal is to land the second bounce of the ball in the first or second zone of the opponent's court. Playing too hard causes the ball to rebound into the back zones, allowing the opponents to maintain the initiative.

To maintain control, the player must strike the ball from above, using the wrist to cut the ball and reduce its speed. For a vibora or overhead shot in the transition zone, the coach advises keeping the arm slightly bent rather than fully extended to maintain power and accuracy. If the ball is played toward the right side, the focus is on depth; if the ball is overhead, the goal is to open the court toward the sides. The player must constantly monitor the ball's trajectory and adjust the height or angle of the shot based on whether previous attempts are landing too close to the net or hitting the glass. This lesson is for players who struggle to maintain control while moving toward the net.
