Effective court positioning relies on understanding when to defend and when to attack. Players often make the mistake of rushing the net when under pressure, which leads to poor shot selection and vulnerability. When the ball is coming easily, use a winner, a lob, or a chiquita. If the ball is difficult, play simple shots to gain time and return to a stable defensive position. Communication with a partner is essential to identify if the opponent is positioned in front or behind, which dictates whether to attack the gap or play a soft shot to maintain control.
Movement must be deliberate. Avoid running through the split step while the opponent is hitting the ball. Arrive at the position early, perform the split step, and then react. When defending, stay back and avoid creeping too far forward. If the opponent hits a high ball, use the extra time to move forward, but if the ball is low, remain in a defensive stance. Always prioritize building the point from back to front rather than forcing an attack from a compromised position.
