Defending from the back of the court requires a shift in mindset from winning the point to winning the net. Playing the ball too fast when the contact point is below net level makes it easy for opponents to hit aggressive volleys. Varying the speed and rhythm prevents the opponent from anticipating shots and adjusting their position. Relying solely on lobs allows the net player to anticipate the overhead, whereas mixing low, slow shots with deep, high lobs forces the opponent to move and tire.

Attempting lobs from difficult positions like half-volleys often leads to errors. Instead, prioritize playing an easy volley to the opponent rather than forcing a high-risk shot. When under pressure, avoid opening the court by playing into the middle rather than towards the sidelines. Playing straight ahead to the player in front can shift the pressure to a partner. Finally, always aim lobs through the center of the court. Cross-court lobs often provide the opponent with easy angles to the fence or side wall, while a central lob limits their options and forces them to cover more ground.
