Smash technique: contact point and footwork
Key takeaway from our Guru
How can I improve my smash power and accuracy?
Move your feet backward to ensure you strike the ball well in front of your body. Use a flat contact with a Continental grip instead of relying on wrist-heavy side spin.
What this lesson covers
The smash requires a flat contact rather than excessive wrist movement. Players often rely on side spin for acceleration, but a flat shot provides the control needed for a winner. Use a Continental grip and imagine closing a bottle of wine to ensure the correct wrist position at impact.
Impact the ball well in front of the body rather than in line with it. Moving the feet backward creates the necessary space to strike the ball in front, which generates power. Aim for a parallel trajectory to shorten the court distance, forcing the ball to return to your side of the net after the bounce.
Decision-making remains the final hurdle. A smash is only effective if the lob is short enough to warrant it. If the ball is too far from the body, a vibora or a bandeja serves as a more reliable winner than a forced smash. This lesson suits intermediate players aiming to reach an advanced level.
