Smash power: when to hit hard and where to aim

Smash4:28Jun 22, 2020

Key takeaway from our Guru

When is it the right time to hit a full-power smash?

Only use full power when both opponents are at the back of the court and you are positioned close to the net. Aim for the center or down the line to avoid hitting the side glass, which slows the ball down.

What this lesson covers

Aggressive smashes require specific court conditions to succeed. Both opponents must be positioned at the back of the court to prevent them from intercepting the ball after it hits the glass. If one opponent stands near the net, a powerful smash risks setting them up for a counter-attack. Your own position also dictates the outcome; being closer to the net increases the chance of a successful finish, whereas hitting from behind the second post makes it difficult to generate enough pressure.

The incoming lob must be slow enough to allow you to get into a stable position before striking. When you decide to commit to full power, avoid hitting the side glass. A double-glass bounce slows the ball down significantly, giving opponents time to recover. Aim instead for the center of the court or down the line to maximize speed and minimize the opponent's reaction time. Stay focused after the shot, as the ball may rebound off the back glass toward the net, allowing the opponent to return it.
