Slice technique: when to use it and when to avoid it
Key takeaway from our Guru
When should I use slice in padel?
Only use slice when you can hit down through the ball, such as on a high ball or a bajada. If you are defending a low ball from the back, avoid the slice to prevent popping the ball up to the net players.
What this lesson covers
Slice is a tool for keeping the ball low, but it carries high risk when used on defensive balls from the back of the court. When opponents are at the net, a slice from a low or fast ball often results in a pop-up or an unforced error. Effective slice usage from the back requires a ball at chest or shoulder height, allowing the player to hit down through the contact. A bajada serves as a prime example of this application. Conversely, when the ball is low or difficult, flat or pushed shots offer better control and margin for error.
At the net, slice becomes a weapon for aggression when the ball is above net height. Brushing down on these balls forces opponents to handle a low rebound. However, balls below net height should be pushed into space to neutralize the point rather than forced with slice. Decision-making relies on asking whether the slice provides a tactical benefit rather than simply if the shot is possible. This approach favors lower-risk choices and higher effectiveness.
