Side glass return: technique and reading the ball

Successful side glass returns rely on reading the opponent's serve position and ball spin before choosing a shot. When an opponent serves from near their side glass, the returner stays closer to their own glass. If the serve comes from the middle, the returner moves further away to compensate. When the ball hits the side glass first, the player lets it bounce before playing. If the ball carries topspin or high power, using two walls is often necessary. In humid conditions, the ball should be taken before it hits the glass to prevent it from sliding away.

Decision-making takes priority over technique. Playing the ball slow and low at the server's feet forces a lift, creating an opportunity to take the net with a lob or a chiquita. A short, early backswing is essential to manage the opponent's pace and maintain control. Players should maintain a continental grip to keep the racket face open, preventing high shots into the glass. The machine gun drill, where the ball is fed at a fast rhythm, forces the player to minimize the backswing and focus on a clean follow-through.
