The server's partner begins in a starting position one big step in front of the second post. From this spot, the player monitors the serve trajectory to decide whether to cover the line or the center. If the serve forces a weak return, the partner moves forward during the split step to intercept the ball and attack. This aggressive movement reduces the opponent's time and prevents the server from having to hit a low volley from the transition area.

Anticipation relies on knowing the server's strengths and the returner's weaknesses. Discussing these patterns during changeovers allows the partner to prepare for specific return types. If the serve is high quality, the partner steps in to finish the point. If the serve is neutral, the partner takes a small step back to prepare for a lob or a defensive volley. Expecting every ball to come to the net position ensures readiness, even if the opponent eventually directs the shot toward the server. Consistent focus on the next ball is vital for maintaining pressure throughout the point.
