Serve technique: height, slice and consistency

The serve begins by maximizing the allowed impact height. Hitting the ball at waist level rather than dropping it too low creates a flatter trajectory, which increases ball speed and prevents a slow, looping arc. Dropping the ball from shoulder height generally aligns the contact point with the legal limit.

Effective serving requires a balance between slice and forward momentum. Players often make the mistake of pointing the racket tip toward the ground, which forces a low contact point and limits swing space. Instead, keep the racket tip pointing toward the side glass. To generate slice, bring the racket head above the ball and push forward through impact. This motion ensures the ball dies after hitting the glass while maintaining sufficient length.

Consistency outweighs raw power. Serving aggressively at the expense of accuracy forces a constant reliance on second serves, which allows opponents to return comfortably. A serve with controlled slice and precise placement is more effective than a high-speed serve that frequently lands out. Varying speed, placement, and depth prevents the opponent from anticipating the serve, especially when aiming for the T or the body on crucial points.
